Yeah, I'm sad that Kirsten is one of the least popular girls. She's my most favorite and I hope to complete her collection someday...probably some very far-away day! I have most of her outfits, but collecting the furniture and other acc. will take a bit longer.

She just seems to be the sweetest of them all to me(or maybe it's that her quieter personality is the most like mine), I just love her! I have a PM doll and she is so pretty, but the Mattel dolls are just as gorgeous IMO. Maybe her sales will pick up with the new AGP opening next month. I don't want AG to "Felicity" her!

i agree that samantha rules the roost when it comes to AG popularity. It is a sad case that the ethnic dolls are the ones on the lower rungs of the ladder so to speak... I find them the most interesting because they are more unique. Samantha is like every other doll... frilly, victorian, and everyday eye and hari combo. so yeah AG sells Samantha like nuts and for that she gets every new item idea that pops up onto AG drawing board while the ethnic and diverse ones sit it out at the curb! Shessh!

It's not a nice thing to think about, but another reason a lot of the AGOC (American Girls of Color) might not sell as fast or be as popular is that a lot of people of color can't afford to pay for a doll like Addy. I mean, I wanted her since the day she came out, and I just got her last Christmas. It might be the same for other little girls. Also, unfortunately some parents might be prejudiced and not want to get their white daughter a black or Hispanic or Native doll. It's not a nice thing to think about, but it does happen.

Samantha, on the other hand, is rich and pretty and has a lot of stuff. She's also in an era that is looked on pretty romantically. so I can see why she'd be super popular. She's not my kind of girl, though.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is sad, but true. As a little girl I got tired of all the red-haired white dolls my mom made for me, and was drawn to African-American dolls. I was asked why I wanted dolls that didn't look like me.

As a little girl I had a real knowledge of discrimination and was shocked and insulted by things that were said by the lady married to my uncle. I am so fortunate that rather than influencing me, she repulsed me away from her set of beliefs. And even though I'm white, I'm the minority where I live and have faced a lot of discrimination for (of all things) not having the right color of hair and the right last name.

I wish more girls would understand that part of the beauty of friendships and dolls is when your friends and dolls aren't exactly the same as you.

Interesting thread. I agree w/ just about all your thoughts...the doll rankings, the reasons some are more popular than others , etc. My dd has Kit. She has no interest in Sam. I think her clothes & styling are too "frilly" for dd. She doesn't care for Kaya, but I think that has more to do w/ her extra long hair & solemn face. She doesn't like the Josefina books at all because she just can't relate (no sister's, no deceased mom AND her ethnicity), but she does think the doll is really pretty. She really likes Addy. They have studied enough about Lincoln at school for Hannah to get a glimpse of the Civil War & what is was about. She say's she may want to get Addy because she IS so different from the other dolls. She wants Felicity next (definitely influenced by the movie) and Molly as well. Addy is on her list way before Sam would ever be. Really neat thread. I'll be interested to see AG's response to rankings.

When you really get down to it only little girls are really into dolls that look just like them, at least when it comes to those who grow up to be doll collectors. I always prefered dolls drastically different from myself... because its pretty hum drum to have to look at blond hair blue eyes everyday in the mirror and then see it echoed in your doll.

I think girls should be encouraged to go for which ever doll they like, and not swayed by adults. My daughter (who has blond hair and green eyes) wanted the agot with blond hair and green eyes (she's 3)... I wasn't thrilled because well like I stated.. I'm not a huge fan of blond dolls... but its what she wanted... and that alone should satisfy me as a mother.
